Did the now-suspended president declare martial law in order in part to protect his wife? 

“That’s a widely held view in South Korea,” a senior Western diplomatic source told me yesterday. “It’s almost a universal assumption in South Korea that his concern about her vulnerability would have played a heavy role in his decision.” 

True or not, Kim had certainly become a reviled figure in her native country. She has been variously dubbed South Korea’s “Lady Macbeth” for her scheming ambition, and its “Michael Jackson” for her extensive cosmetic surgery.

Kim has long served as grist for South Korea’s gossip mill. When she married Yoon in 2012, there was disparaging talk about her dubious background and past work as a nightclub hostess. Her mother was subsequently tried and acquitted on charges of running a care home without a licence, and later sentenced to a year’s imprisonment for property fraud.

명신이는 오랫동안 한국의 가십 공장의 재료가 되어 왔다. 2012년 윤씨와 결혼했을 때, 명신이의 모호한 배경과 과거 나이트클럽 접대부로 일한 경력에 대한 비방적인 이야기가 돌았다. 명신이 엄마는 무면허 요양원을 운영한 혐의로 재판을 받고 무죄 판결을 받았고, 나중에 재산 사기 혐의로 1년형을 선고받았다

Ironically, that controversial doctoral dissertation was on fortune telling – a subject that came back to bite her again this week when a video showing her apparently praising a male journalist for his alleged sexual prowess after reading his palm went viral.

“He’s kind of in thrall to her,” said one astute observer. “She’s a very, very heavy influence on him, even to the point of being controlling.”
